| Where excesses towards women would lead society to? | | | Jammu, july24: The incidents of kidnappings, rapes, all across the state coming to the fore in recent days prove the degrading moral values in our society on the one hand and vindicate the belief of those believing in giving birth only to male child and commit clandestine pre-natal murder of girl child on the other. The fresh event of a father outraging the chastity of his 12 year daughter at Reasi has sent shock waves far and wide while in another shameful happening a teen aged girl was kidnapped and kept captive for some days by some unknown youth at Handwara in north Kashmir , is disgraceful to our society. Another event in which a woman was compelled to commit suicide when some police cops forcibly entered her house and outraged her modesty gives the feeling that if law enforcing agency indulges in such acts then who could be the protecting authority. These are only the reported incidents; the number of such events is much higher than they appear. Due to threat or the apprehension of losing respect in the society, victims prefer to remain mum. The events of eve teasing that take place in every street have so far been challenge for our society. In our cities and towns every dusk fall restricts the movement of women folk unless accompanied by a male. We can't blame the law and law enforcing agencies. It is our society which has to come forward and find out a way out to this problem. Intelligentsia can play a vital role in eradicating the menace. Whenever the incidents of such nature take place, every body raises the finger against the law and law enforcing agencies but this is beyond any doubt that erosion of morality is not something that can be restored by proper policing and laws alone. By no means is it an easy problem to cope with. In fact the criminals of such category should be punished publicly so that the rest of the lot learns a lesson from it. The panchayts should be authorized in this regard. The continuing menace across the state compels the married ones to go for sex determination. The ratio of women in our state is 812 against 1000 men. In case the situation remains same it will linger down further with the passage of time. It is the same society which will have to face the brunt of the diminishing female population in the society. Only the immediate measures by means of inculcating moral education among the youth of the society can improve the situation for future. The parents have to play a greater role in this regard.
