Police claims to solve much-hyped rape and murder case

Police today claimed to have solved the much-hyped Handwara rape and murder case and said two Kashmiris and two outsiders were involved in the murder of the sixteen year old girl who was murdered after being raped in near dense fields in Batpora Langate in Handwara area.

The four culprits, who have confessed to the police that they had committed the crime, were identified by police sas Azher Ahmad Mir alias Billa S/o Ghulam Mohammad Mir R/O village Shallapora Mukhdom Mohalla in Langatearea of Handwara, Mohd Sadiq Mir alias Saada Choor S/O Abdul Rehman Mir R/o village Bunpora Langate, Jehangir alias Jehangir Behari S/o Siraj Din R/o District Maida West Bengal and Suresh Kumar alias Suresh Moochi S/o Sultan Ram R/O District Junjnu in Rajesthan.

The murder of the teenage school girl, Tabinda Gani D/o Abdul Gani Shah R/o Batapora Langate on July 20, 2007 had invited public anger and rumours were making rounds that labourers from outside the state were involved in the crime. Following demonstrations in the entire Handwara area, police rounded up 16 persons suspected of having involvement in the rape and murder case. During sustained interrogation, four among the detained confessed to police that they had raped the girl and later murdered her.

In their confessions, the four said that Tabinda, while going back to her home from the school, was intercepted by them and was forcibly taken to nearby Orchards where she was raped and latter killed. The accused had concealed her body in the Bushes.

Police said that the investigation of the case was entrusted to a special investigation team headed by SDPO Handwara Manzoor Ahmed under the direct supervision of SP Handwara, Dr Haseeb Mughal.

Investigation of the case revealed that all the four accused were close associates of for last two years. Azhar and Mohd Sadiq are notorious criminals and cases of extortion already lie registered against each of them at Police Station Handwara. The other two accused namely Jehangir and Suresh Moochi are carpenter and cobbler by profession and have been staying in Handwara for a long time where they attinted close association with Azhar and Sadiq.

Polioce said that the four had met in the outskirts of Langate at Batapora-Wader at around 1300 hours on the day of the murder. While people were busy with the Friday congregation prayers, the four found the opportunity right and stationed themselves on the road leading to Battapora where they ate lunch and drunk. It by then that they found the deceased walking alone. The four followed her and caught her unawares. While one accused caught her from back side and closed her mouth by putting his hand on her mouth, the others caught the victim and dragged her to the nearby Maize fields orchards.

Police said that the accused confessed that the girl cried desperately for help but she was overpowered by them. Later she was raped by all of them. They have also confessed that the victim had subsequently fainted. The accused apprehended that the victim may narrate the tale to the family members and hence, they decided to eliminate her. Using a local made knife, one of the accused slit her throat, leading to her death. Subsequently, they buried her body leaving her face open in the apple orchards some 150 meters down the link road leading to Batapora. The accused persons then left the scene of crime and went to their respective locations. They have even joined the protest processions of dead body which was brought by Police to Langate Sub District Hospital, police added.
