| Smallest batch to Amarnath | | | ET REPORTER Jammu, July 24: As the holy Amarnath Yatra makes steady progress despite grenade attacks, terrorist threats and inclement weather, the number of pilgrims taking sojourn to the South Kashmir cave shrine today dipped to an all time low of this year's pilgrimage. The decline in the number of pilgrims undertaking the Amarnath yatra continued for third consecutive day with only 793 devotees leaving here today for the cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas. Today's was the smallest batch, including 124 women and 14 children, which left from the base camp of MAM Stadium here early morning in a fleet of 25 vehicles amidst tight security, officials said. The pilgrims were expected to reach their respective destinations at Nunwan in Pahalgam and Baltal base camps by this evening, they said. Earlier, 796 pilgrims had left from Jammu for the holy shrine on July 12, they said, adding there has been a dip in the number of devotees undertaking the yatra since the grenade attack at Baltal camp on July 17 in which one person was killed and several injured. Another grenade attack on the community kitchen for pilgrims at Pahalgam on July 21 leaving 15 injured, caused high security concerns among the pilgrims with many deciding against the yatra. As many as 7,042 pilgrims had left from here to the cave shrine since July 18 till date, while 9,913 had visited the shrine during the corresponding period of six days from July 12 to 17. With today's batch, a total of 40,536 pilgrims had left from here to cave shrine of Amarnath since the commencement of the yatra on July 2.
