| Major fall to soldier's bullets | | |
ET REPORTER Jammu, July 24: In yet another case of stress killing among forces, also known as fratricide, a soldier last nigh pumped bullets into his senior officer leaving him dead in Gurez sector of north Kashmir. Meanwhile, in two other separate cases, one CRPF cop ended his life in Kashmir while another made abortive bid on life. Reports reaching here said that a sepoy identified as Mohan Chand Munda fired at Major P Alexandra and shot him dead. The reason behind the jawan taking such an extreme step was not immediately known, a spokesman said. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident. During the last five years as many as 450 soldiers have killed themselves while about 100 died after being shot by their colleagues in the trouble torn Jammu and Kashmir. India's over one million strong Army has recorded an annual average of 100 suicides in recent years mainly due to the rigors of combating revolts in Kashmir and the remote north-east.Dozens of soldiers,including officers,have been killed by their colleagues in quarrels over not being granted leave and other personal issues During the first six months of the current year the Army lost 72 soldiers to enemy attacks but over 100 soldiers have already taken their lives,another 32 have been killed by their colleagues. The Army authorities have introduced yoga classes to help soldiers and officers to liberate themselves from the stress problems.
