Rs. 8.50 cr spent on Modern Fruit Mandi Sopore: Kar

Srinagar, August 11 – In order to promote the marketing of Horticulture produce especially apple, by ensuring quality maintenance. The government has decided to enforce the agriculture produce Marketing Regulation Act in force vigorously in Notified Area of Sopore tehsil to make the growers and traders aware of the benefits of the Act and make them abide by its provisions. This would not only help maintain the reputation of Kashmir fruit but also earn remunerative prices for the produce.
A function in this connection was held at Sopore Fruit Mandi today in which large number of traders and growers participated, besides the officers of Horticulture, Marketing and Planning departments. The experts and other speakers highlighted the provisions of the Act Advising the Growers and Traders to implement the Act for overall benefit of the trade and growth of the sector.
On the occasion MLC and Ex-Minister Mr. Ghulam Rasool Kar who was the Chief Guest called for the diversification of agriculture activities and stressed the need for maintaining quality control. He said markets have to be gained not by selling the age-old fame of Kashmir apple but by providing high standard and quality fruit to the people outside the country so that reputation of the Kashmir gets strengthened. He also asked for utilization of services of trained agriculture manpower in the rural areas to achieve planned growth and development.
Director Horticulture Planning and Marketing Mr. Showkat Ahmad Zargar while explaining the objects and aims of the Act said that the implementation of the Act will help regulate supplies as per demand and ensure quality maintenance and standard of fruit marketing. Referring to the facilities being provided at the Sopore Mandi he said more than Rs. 8.50 crores have been spent out of a total project cost of Rs. 18.65 crores of the Fruit Mandi to create where there will be six hundred shop sites, Guest Houses, Telecommunications facilities, Auction sheds, banking facilities and other related things of these many have already been provided.
The president fruit Mandi Mr. N.A. Baig stressed for completion of all works in the Mandi and also ensure speedy transfer of shop sites so that the business in fruit Mandi run for the whole year.
Later, Director Planning and Marketing inaugurated the office of Chief Executive Officer of the department who has been entrusted Produce Marketing Regulation Act.
