| Row over metering leads to snapping of power | | Tophsherkhania quarter dwellers exposed to hardships | |
Jammu July 25: With no electricity, no water supplies, the inmates of Toph Sherkhania Quarters face all the hard ships in this scorching heat and humid condition. The PDD authorities, yesterday decided to snap the electricity supply as the dwellers prevented them to install electronic meters giving reasons that they weren't in a position to afford the electricity bill. Since yesterday morning the electricity supply was cut, automatically drying up the taps leading to more than hundred flats as water to these quarters is supplied through a pump from a nearby tank. Both the essentials of life in this muggy situation have exposed the dwellers to awful sufferings. The old aged ones were compelled to spend entire night on roof tops while some of the young ones either went to their relatives or took refuge in nearby locality. Those left with no option had to spend entire night looking towards skies to seek divine support. The infants and the old aged suffered the most. Through out the night the humid conditions made the infants to cry but all in futile. The elderly people were heard remembering God whole night. The water supply that has got slashed due to non-availability of water multiplied the miseries manifold. The availability of water would have to some extent, subsided their trouble but even a sip of water eluded their fortune. "All the hell was let loose since the electricity and water disappeared. I could not even stay inside and spent entire night talking with my friend, Roopa wati about the child hood happenings," Said an 85 year old woman Shoba Wati. The inmates of these quarters have been foiling the attempts of Power Development Department to install electronic meters from last some time on the reasons that they are not in a condition to bear the tariff sum. In this connection they have times met to the political leadership of state to put their point across. Raj Nath Bakshi, a dweller of Toph Sherkhania says, "We are ignored on all the fronts. We don't get any benefit merely for being migrants. The meagre four thousand rupees hardly makes our both ends meet. It would be impossible for us to afford electricity tariff." Attan Ji Koul asks, "When we aren't eligible for government jobs merely on the plea of having migrant status then how are we entitled electricity tariff." Shadi Lal, another inmate of quarters is more or less of similar view, "We are an uncared community and no body is worried about the miseries we are going through". "Where is our share in Rehber-e-Taleen, Rehber- e- zirat and Rehbr-e- Sehat? How does Government compel us to pay tariff if we are ignored for all the benefits", he asks
