| Harmony is needed between Congress, PDP in J&K’ | | Failure in running coalition will trigger difficulties: Jacob | | BL KAK NEW DELHI, JULY 27: MM Jacob, confidant of Congress president and member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), has warned that Congress party and its ally, People's Democratic Party (PDP, will find it difficult to come back to power if the existing coalition is not run with care and caution. The Jammu and Kashmir State is going to the polls next year. MM Jacob, who has been given an added responsibility of overseeing crucial states like Jammu and Kashmir and Karnataka, admitted in an interview that some problems had cropped up between the Congress and the PDP. Problems cropping up between the coalition partners "have to be sorted out as and when they arise", Jacob said. Responding to a question, Jacob said: "We are working hard to bring harmony between the two allies (Congress and People's Democratic Party). We are preparing ground for strengthening Congres in the districts (in J&K). I had been to J&K recently for mobilising maximum votes for our Presidential candidate, Pratibha Patil". Jacob, who is known for his loyalty to the Congress and proximity to Sonia Gandhi, was asked to deliver his opinion about the Congress president's political performance. His reply ran thus: "She has come up as a very capable political leader. She has a sharp understanding and keen sense of listening. She listens to different sxhades of opinion with extreme patience and takes a neutral stand. She has to compromise with all types of politicians, comiong from various States, yet she successfully handles people and tackles the situation shrewdly". Nor was it all. Jacob described Sonia Gandhi as the "symbol of unity for the Congress". Jacob said: "It is very important for a leader to command respect from the subordinates which she does well and she has a good stance as the Congress president. Nobody can accuse her of being partial to one Sate, religion or region". On the performance of the Congress-led coalition government at the Centre, Jacob said: "Under the given circumstances the UPA government is doing very well. One index of performance could be measured by the economic resurgence. When India got independence our annual economic growth was less than one per cent. Today it has already crossed eight per cent, expected to reach nine per cent next year". Second index, according to Jacob, could be the skill and efficiency of the party to tackle the problems arising in the country. The Manmohan Singh government, he said, had been able to handle them successfully
