Is Matoo joining politics?
7/28/2007 11:08:10 PM

Jammu, July 28
Vice Chancellor Prof Amitabh Mattoo, another hitherto non political personality of the state is all set to list his name in the annals of state politics, following the trend laid down by none other then but his own community member former Chief Secretary Vijay Bakaya.
However, while Bakaya was roped in by the state's largest regional party National Conference, Amitabh Mattoo would be the man of its arch rival Peoples Democratic Party which reintroduced him to Jammu and Kashmir by installing him as Jammu University Vice- Chancellor.
Reliable sources in PDP disclosed that the party is not only providing a launching platform for him for entering into the realms of politics, but also promised him ticket for the next Assembly elections from the lone minority dominant seat of Habakadal.
As every body knows that even Vijay Bakaya shared a good relation with PDP high command and served as CS at the time when it was leading the coalition, prior commitment of Mufti Sayeed with Amitabh Matto is said to be the main reason behind his (Bakaya's) joining NC instead of being his earlier intimate.
"Before going to NC Vijay Bakya approached his 'first love' PDP but, his offer was politely turned down by Mufti Sayeed on the pretext that he has already made a commitment with Amitabh" said a PDP source.
He said "though there was no difficulty in roping in both of them, but the problem was that of constituency" adding " considering it a safe constituency for their being Kashmiri Pandits, both of them want to contest from Habakdal, which was impossible in case of their being in the same party".
"The high profile Academician is about to complete his extension term as Vice Chancellor after few months" sources said adding that in coming days, people would see him joining Peoples Democratic party.
