Non-Kashmiris continue to leave Kashmir
7/29/2007 11:44:58 PM
Srinagar| July 29
Non-Kashmiri labourers and artisans continue to quit Kashmir. More than 10,000 non-Kashmiris have left the Kashmir in the past two days.
On Sunday also, long lines of non-Kashmiris were seen boarding buses, tata sumo and temp traveler vehicles at Ganta Ghar, Lal Chowk, General Bus Stand Batamaloo and the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) in the summer capital Srinagar. "We had come here to work and earn but when our lives are in danger, it is better to leave the place", said a labourer from Bihar, Suresh.
A large queue of non-Kashmiri labourers reached Batamaloo bus stand in Srinagar, boarded the buses and left for Jammu. One among them, Bhola Ansari of Madhua, Bihar said that he has been coming to the Valley for the past two years. "Nobody ever harassed me or my fellow Bihari labourers during my stay in Valley. I was staying at Aloochi Bagh and the house owner told me the other day to check-out. Afterwards I consulted my colleagues and all of us decided to leave the Valley and we have boarded the bus for Jammu", Bhola said.
The non-Kashmiris in large numbers also boarded government-owned State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) buses at TRC and left for the winter capital, Jammu. "We had never thought that we would be leaving half-way through the season. We are poor labourers and had come here to earn money for the survival of our family back at our homes. But our families would survive only when we are alive. For the safety of our lives, we are leaving," said a labourer from Uttar Pradesh, Tiwari. He said that he and six of his colleagues were putting up at Hawal Srinagar and were asked by the house owner and the people there to leave.
Reports pouring in from North Kashmir said that non-local labourers and artisans were leaving Kupwara, Baramulla and Bandipora in large numbers. Scores of the non-state subject labouers are boarding Jammu based buses from the district headquarters and leaving for their respective places.
