| Principals, teachers play truant | | Rural schools non functional; students worst hit | | Majid Malik DODA JULY 30- Despite spending huge amount on salaries of the Principals and other teaching staff of the schools, it was ironical that they have been rendering no service in the schools and thus proving to a burden on the state exchequer. Following complaints about their non- functioning especially in rural areas this reporter interviewed a cross section of society. The majority of them expressed dismay over the functioning of the Principals and the school heads saying that these officers hardly attend the schools and report most on the pay days or when some body from the administration is on tour to the area. The aggrieved people of village Malanoo, Khara area of Tehsil Thatri in Doda district highlighted their problems regarding improper functioning of the Higher Secondary School Malanoo. They alleged that the Principal of the School remains absent from duty and the school is suffering very badly due to alleged irregularities of principal and permanent staff of the schools. Village Chowkidars Ghulam Qadir Mir and Mohammed Din Wani alleged that the students of Higher Secondary School Malanoo are suffering badly due to absenteeism of Principal and other regular teachers adding that Principal visits school twice a month especially at the time of withdrawa of salary. Taking cue from their boss the teachers too remain absent from the school resulting in virtual closure of the school, the alleged.. The school has strength of more than 400 students with 20 staff members. However when this reporter visited the school, there were only five teachers including four contractual lecturers present besides three orderlies against the total strength of 21 When this correspondent interacted with the students of the School they told that their education is suffering very badly as no one bothers about their future adding the Principal visits only three days in a month and other teachers too remain absent from duty. The 10th class students alleged that till date only two lessons of social studies have been completed and expressed apprehensions that if the present trend continued they fear the course would never been completed till the examinations are over. ‘Some teachers are posted in the school for over a decade and their attitude of working is not less than a dictator’, the students said. They further alleged that some teachers were harassing them and forcing them to work for them in their fields. One of the contractual lecturers on conditions of anonymity told this correspondent that the school is suffering very badly due to irregularities of the existing regular staff and the whole burden is on our shoulders as no one bothers about the future of the students. He further said that when he talked to the Principal about the alleged irregularities and mismanagement he cautioned me to remain calm as otherwise he will relive him from the school and deduct his salary. ‘You have been appointed in this school for out luxuries’; the Principal is quoted to have said to the lecturer. When contacted Director School Education Jammu A K Raina assured that action would be initiated against the erring teachers adding that no one would be spared, if found guilty. Chief Education Officer (CEO) Doda A.K.Sen confirmed that a team led by DPO has been constituted to identify the dead wood in the education department adding that inquiry will be conducted into the alleged mal functioning of the schools due to absence of the teachers.
