| Pre-poll alliances depend on fate of PDP-Congress | | | Jammu,July 30 Not only the smaller politicalparties but the main opposition National Conference keep a watch on the health of the PDP-Congressalliance so that they could work out combinations withone or the other organisation. Reports indicate that the National Conference leadership has preferred to maintain astute silence over the ups and downs in the PDP-Congress alliance because it does not want to disclose its strategy in advance which could totally seal the chance for its electoral adjustment or understanding with the Congress during the next Assembly poll. One thing is clear the NC leadership can never have any equation with the PDP and the latter too is not prepared to enter into any adjustment with the former because both of them treat each other main political foes. If left to Chief Minister,Ghulam Nabi Azad,he would prefer National Conference to PDP but the Congress high command has clearly told him that the present political arrangement has to be kept alive at any cost. Since the BJP has announced that it will have no alliance with Kashmir centric parties, meaning the National Conference and the PDP,it cannot but explore the possibility of having some electoral understanding with the BSP.According to a senior BJP leader,Dr Nirmal Singh,"we shall not join hands with smaller parties that have hardly any base.If there is any party that has pockets of influence in the Jammu region it is the BSP." However, the BSP has already initiated talks with the Praja Parishad, headed by Chander Mohan Sharma. If the tie-up between the two materialises the scope for the BJP-BSP alliance gets remote because Chander Mohan Sharma will never agree on BSP joining hands with the BJP. Indications are that the BJP may opt for going alone in the poll fray as its leadership believes that the ommissions and commissions of the ruling alliance were going to help it as the antiincumbency factor may weigh heavy on the head of the Congress. The Panthers Party has the same opinion about the Congress.Even if some pre-poll alliances come up the Jammu region will have multi-cornered contests in 37 Assembly constituencies and in the 46 constituencies in the Kashmir valley it will be primarily a triangular contest among the PDP,the Congress and the National Conference
