Hindi Play ‘Panja’, translation of W.W. Jacob’s famous play ‘Monkey’s Paw’, and directed by Anil Tickoo and another play ‘Gatt’ (Dogri) by Balwant Thakur and directed by Neeraj Kant stole the show at the jam packed auditorium at Abhinav Theatre on the 13th day of the on going fortnight long Theatre Festival here today.
With today’s two performances Natrang completed the 15th show of the ongoing biggest theatre event of the country.
The fortnight long Theatre Festival by one group is being organized by Natrang in collaboration with J&K Academy of Art, Culture & Languages.
The story of the play Panja’ highlights the unending desire of a greedy family, who come into possession of ‘the Panja’, which has supernatural powers for granting them three wishes. In their greed they ignore the fact, that the repercussions of its use would bring disaster in the long run. The Mehra family lived happily. However on acquiring the ‘Panja’ they become greedy, ignoring the warnings of using it. The fulfillment of Mehra’s wish proves disastrous and heart rendering. There is an element of tragic irony in the play as the supernatural powers of the ‘Panja’ destroy the peace and joy of those who possess it. The old parents’ life becomes miserable when their wish is granted, which comes in the form of monetary compensation for the death of their only son. Totally shattered they use the Panja for granting the second wish to see their son alive again. They are terrified by the loud knocks on the door, when they discover that the dead son has returned, horribly mutilated, in desperation the father uses the ‘Panja’ to grant his third wish so that his son can be dead attain and rest in peace. The play ends on a tragic note evoking sympathies for the greedy couple whose dreams have been shattered by the supernatural ‘Panja’.
The cast of the play included Neeraj Kant, Suresh Kumar, Mukulni Sethi, Sanjeev Gupta and Pawan Verma while music was composed by Pankaj Sharma and Lokesh Chander. Lights were operated by Suraj Ganjoo and Jai Ram and the costumes were designed by Deepika B. Thakur.
‘Saniyan Bhaye Kotwal’ a Hindi comedy play directed by Balwant Thakur will be staged tomorrow at 6 P.M. at Abhinav Theatre the show is being sponsored by Anand Group of Industries.
