Out of loop from reality, leaders lie on situation
Indian Government is busy pleasing Pakistan and separatists while security scenario worsens
7/31/2007 12:02:36 AM

NIRBHAY JAMMUAL
Jammu, July 30:
Situation is under control….situation is fast improving…..situation is better than the previous year –these are the popular and oft repeated statements made day in and day out by three national leaders Prime Minister, Home Minister and the Defence Minister when they talk about Jammu and Kashmir.
It is strange who these leaders are out to please –Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, the separatist leaders of Kashmir or the leadership of Peoples Democratic Party. Interestingly, when Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad points out towards fragility of the situation and uncertain graph of violence he is given a snub and accused of not supporting the efforts of Prime Minister.
After all what exactly is the prevailing security situation in Jammu and Kashmir ? No body is coming up with a statement which touches the ground realities. Out Armed forces and other forces are so disciplined they don't negate the versions of the political leadership in public but when the leaders describe the situation as best the officers from the forces and those who bear the brunt in the field are taken aback as what situation is being talked about.
The defence Minister AK Antony who was in the state for two days to make an assessment of the situation said that there is improvement. Even though he remained non-committal on the reduction of troop strength but he pointed out that the situation was fast changing for the better.
Unfortunately, shortly after the Defence Minister wrapped up his visit to the state, there was a blast at Shalimar killing five people and injuring 22. Another succumbed to the injuries today. Except a local girl, they were all Gujrati tourists. Their bodies were flown in to Gujrat today. When their bodies reach their homes, people there can make an idea of the situation which has been described by all is best and fast improving.
This is nothing new, Indian politicians are always out of loop from reality. It is sad. While trying to make friendship with some few the Government has failed to deal stubbornly with Pakistan and the militants backed by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir .
It is time for the country to be strong in Jammu and Kashmir and strong against Pakistan. Indian cannot keep thinking what United States will do if Indian does something. India has unnecessarily given too much importance to Pakistan. National Security Advisor's statement that peace process is holding is indication as how from top to bottom every body in Indian establishment is out to please Pakistan for nothing.
while union home minister Shivraj Patil recently felt there was marked improvement in the overall situation in the state, some security agencies shared a grim picture of Jammu and Kashmir during a meeting with him in Srinagar early this month. Sources said the senior officers of the security agencies referred to the continuation of infiltration and "increase in militant activities". They advocated against troop reduction under these circumstances. Patil remained non committal on the issue. He said a high level central committee, formed on the directions of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, and is taking care of the issue and that a decision to this effect would be taken by the centre only after the recommendations of the committee are received.
Among the security agencies, army has been publicly opposing reduction in troops. The army officers during the meeting referred to the number of alleged infiltrations bids and subsequent killing and arrest of militants along LoC. But still the leadership is singing in chorus that situation is improving
