‘Sainyan Bhaye Kotwal’, tale of nepotism, corruption staged

Super Comedy ‘Sainyan Bhaye Kotwal’ in Hndustani directed by Balwant Thakur kept every body spellbound at Abhinav Theatre on the 14th day of the ongoing Natrang’s Silver Jubilee Theatre Festival.
Written by Basant Sabnis in Marathi, the play has been changed by Balwant Thakur to make it more contemporary. Today’s performance was sponsored by Nidra Coir and Spring Mattresses.
Raman Bhalla MLA was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Other prominent persons present on the occasion were S.P. Anand, Chairman and Sweesh Anand Managing Director of Anand Group of Industries.
In the play a kingdom ‘Surya Nagar’ is shown suffering from corruption, nepotism and lawlessness. The king is busy in hunting and foreign tours and the functionaries of his government are busy in making the best use of his absence. Kotwal (Chief of police) of the kingdom dies and the king authorizes the Prime Minister to appoint a suitable person at his place. Hawaldar the only contender of the post who was waiting for the last 10 years for Kotwal to die gets a big set back when Prime Minister appoints his own brother-in-law to the post. Now Hawaldar had no other option but to get the new Kotwal trapped in some criminal case. Kotwal who is fond of music is taken to a court singer where he fall in love with her and visits regularly. The court singer is already engaged with Hawaldar, who encourages her to continue be fooling Kotwal and demand royal things to get her love. In this process most of the royal things are stolen to gift the court singer but the king comes to know only when his royal bed is found missing. The play is a symbolic picture of the contemporary political happenings. A caricature of the bad governance has been beautifully depicted in the play. Sanjeev Gupta as Kotwal gave best of his performance using a innovative histrionics. Anil Tickoo as Hawaldar and Pankaj Sharma as Siphal demonstrated their professional abilities in acting. Kamaljeet Kaur as Mena impressed everyone, Neeraj kant as Raja and Suresh Kumar as Pradhan did justice to their roles. Others who performed successfully in the play included Rahul Chanda, Deepak Virdhi, Mohit Sharma, Rohit Verma, Pankush Verma, Mayank Bakshi and Rahul Singh.
The music of the play was composed by Suraj Singh who was also the lead singer. The other singers in the play included Pravinder Singh, Chanderlata Kolhi, Supriya Sharma, and Bhart Kumar, Satish Lalotra was on Dholak. Suraj Ganjoo and Jai Ram designed and executed the lights. The sets were designed by Chander Shekhar and sound by Lokesh Chander. Sumeet Sharma looked after the public Relations.
Today’s conclusion of the function was marked by honouring of the artists by Raman Bhalla by Anand Group of Industries.
On the concluding of the fortnight long theatre festival ‘Suno Eh Kahani’ a Dogri play directed by Balwant Thakur will be staged at 9 P.m at Abhinav Theatre tomorrow..
