Come Febraury 2007 and Katra town, base camp of Mata Vaishno devi shrine, will become centre of tourist activity as the Indian rail authorities were hoping to extend 11 out of 15 trains connecting Jammu with rest of the country to Katra base camp.
This was stated by J.P.Batra,Chairman RailwayBoard,while presiding over the passing out parade ofthe RPF at Kathua today. He said that the work on Qazig-und-Baramulla railtrack was on progress and expected that the railway services will be operational on atleast 45 km strtchin the Valley.
He said that Qazigund-Baramulla rail link was likely to be completed till 2009. Referring to the ongoing work on the doubling of the rail track between Jammu and Jalalan-dhar the Railway authorities stated that so far 57 km stretch had been covered and during the current financial year90 km stretch would be covered for which Rs.120 croreshad been earmarked.
The plan of doubling the rail track between Jammuand Jalandhar had been conceived in 1997-98 and thework had been started in 2002.
It was stated that since the expansion in the railnetwork the demand for RPF personnel had increased. The demand had further escalated with the plan ofconnecting Jammu with Baramulla by train and accordingly the Railways authorities have laid emphasis on imparting training to larger batches of RPF personnel. 1042 RPF personnel were said to have completed one year's training.
In his address, Director General, Railway Protection Force, Sh.A.K.Suri said that this batch of 1042 RPF personnel is fortunate enough to have received training at this Training School from J&K Police Personnel who have got vast experience in dealing with terrorism. He said that the training imparted to the RPF personnel will help them to meet any eventuality in their day to day responsibilities . He asked the RPF Personnel to discharge their duties with dedication so that people feel proud of the Force.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Principal Police Training School, Kathua, Sh.K.L.Baghat gave details about the training imparted to the RPF Personnel during their seven and a half month long training course at the School. He said these recruits have been trained in modern and sophisticated weapons such as Ak-47 Assault Rifle, 5.56 INSAS Rifle, LMG, Carbine,7.62 SLR, .303 Rifle, Pistol and Revolver. During the training period, lectures were delivered on Cyber crime so as to give the trainees some concept of Cyber crime, he said.
Among others present on the occasion included Chowdhary Lal Singh, Member Parliament, Addl. Director General Police Headquarters, Sh.R.V.Raju, Inspector General, Police, Jammu Zone, Dr.S.P.Vaid, Inspector General(Modernization), Sh.P.L.Gupta and other civil officers .
