| Scam worth crores of rupees detected in CA&PD | | | UDHAMPUR, AUGUST 11-With the arrest of two ration dealers namely Niyamat Ali r/o Prem Nagar, Mr. Hari Ram r/o Haneja, Thathri under the jurisdiction of Police Station, Thathri in district Doda on August 2, 2006, Doda Police has succeeded in unearthing a ration scam of worth over Rs.3.42 crore in Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA &PD) Department at Doda. This was revealed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Udhampur-Doda Range, Mr. L. Mohinti in a press conference at Kud, today. Senior Superintendent of Police, S. Manohar Singh was also present on the occasion. During investigations, it came to light that dealer namely Niyamat Ali and Mr. Hari Ram have sold the government ration to Bharat Bhushan Sharma, shopkeeper of Premnagar in connivance with local employees of CA & PD for their personal benefits thereby causing huge loss to state exchequer and depriving the deserving beneficiaries of ration meant for them. The accused officials used to sell the ration of various categories like Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Anntodaya Ann Yojna (AAY) to the shopkeepers at higher rates like Rice @ Rs.9 per kg wheat @ Rs.7 per kg and sugar @ Rs.17 per kg. The same ration is further sold to the people at the exorbitant rates. Responding to the query of media persons regarding the status of the case, the DIG said that verification of stores of CA & PD is in progress and added that further investigation of the case is going to ascertain the involvement of other linked officials of CA & PD in the misappropriation of government ration which would be established only after the physical verification of the stores is over. CA & PD scam would be handed over to vigilance organization for further action, he added. Mr. Mohinti further disclosed that in CA & PD Division Doda, a loss of over Rs.2.22 crore has occurred to state exchequer while in Kishtwar CA & PD Division Rs.1.20 crore misappropriation of government money has been detected. Police is conducting further investigations and more arrests are likely in near future, he added. Briefing the media persons, Mr. Mohinti said that Doda Police has booked 43 persons in 19 different cases under Excise, NDPS Act and misappropriation of Government property since January 29, 2006 till date.
