Colonel, Jawan killed near LOC

Srinagar, July 31
Army Colonel and a jawan were killed while foiling infiltration bid near Line of Control(LOC) in north Kashmir on Tuesday .
According to Defence spokesman, the soldiers challenged a group of militants near Gadihal in Uri who were trying to cross over to this side from Pakistan side of LOC this morning. "The militants opened fire on the soldiers which was retaliated; triggering an encounter in the ensuing gunfight two army Jawans of 9 Masatha LI including a Commanding Officer ColonelVasanath V were killed"
”In an encounter since night 30 Jul 07, militants, on being detected, failed to escape towards Pakistani side of Line of Control. Troops occupied dominating positions and prevented the infiltrated militants to escape”,spokesman said

According to defence spokesman,”Col Vasanth V, CO 9 Maratha LI, along with reinforcements rushed to site to personally supervise the operation. Under his leadership, troops in a deft move, surrounded militants in difficult and thickly wooded forested area. Heavy firefight ensued in which Colonel personally flushed out militants. Displaying cool courage and operational acumen, the officer poised himself and his party to block the escape routes of entrapped militants. Though being wounded, he moved swiftly closer to the hiding place of militants and fierce encounter from close quarters ensued. With little care for his personal safety, the daring Commanding Officer, leading from the front, gunned down the entrapped militants.

In a point blank face to face exchange of heavy volume of fire Colonel Vasanth V, Lance Naik Bachav Shahkant Ganapat and Lance Havildar Ramanna RB were injured and Four to five militants are believed to be killed.

Colonel Vasanth V and Lance Naik Bachav Shahkant Ganapat succumbed to injuries in hospital.
The gunfight was on when reports last came in, the sources said
