Jammu, July 31: Even as the leaders sing in chorus about the "improvement in situation", two valiant soldiers of Indian Army including a Colonel today lost their lives while fighting the militants in a fresh infiltration bid in Uri section of North Kashmir.
Reports reaching here said that a Colonel, a soldier and four intruding militants were killed near Uri town along the Line of Control in North Kashmir today. The incident occurred when a group of heavily armed militants was challenged as they tried to infiltrate into India .
"The militant group was confronted by troops of the 9 Maratha Light Infantry near Ghodetal, 15 km from the border town of Uri, in the morning. The militants have been surrounded and a gun battle continued till the evening, said a Defence spokesman.
According to the Srinagar based Defence spokesman, Col VK Mathur, "Colonel Vasanth V, commanding officer of 9 Maratha LI, along with reinforcements rushed to the site to personally supervise the operation. Under the determined and resolute leadership of Col Vasanth, troops in a deft move surrounded terrorists in a difficult and thickly-wooded forested area".
"Heavy firefight ensued in which Colonel Vasanth personally flushed out militants. Displaying cool courage and operational acumen, he poised himself and his party to block the escape routes of entrapped militants.
"Though wounded, he moved swiftly closer to the hiding place of militants and a fierce encounter from close quarters ensued. With little care for his personal safety, the daring colonel, leading from the front, gunned down the entrapped militants.
"Colonel Vasant V and Lance Naik Bachav Shahkant Ganapat who were seriously wounded in this encounter, which is still going on, succumbed in the hospital," Mathur said in the evening.
"Havaldar Ramana R.B. who was also seriously wounded in the encounter is undergoing treatment in the hospital."
