Two to three thousand militants, equipped with sophisticated weapons and explosives, were waiting to crossover
8/1/2007 11:55:20 PM

Srinagar, Aug 1
Eight militants, a Colonel and a soldier were killed in a 24-hour gun-battle near the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri Sector in north Kashmir. This was the first major encounter near the border this year, an Army spokesman said on Wednesday.
The Army spokesman said the encounter, which lasted 24 hours, ended this noon, and all the eight militants, who according to him had crossed over to this side were killed.
The spokesman added that the Commanding Officer, Colonel Vasanth V, of 9 Maratha, lance naik Bachav Shahkant Ganapat and four militants were killed after soldiers of 9 Maratha spotted and challenged a group of militants near Godethal Uri yesterday morning.
Four militants engaged the troops in a gunfight which ended today.
“In this operation which was at a heavy loss of two brave soldiers of the battalion, who achieved martyrdom while fighting the Pakistan aided militants, eight Afghan hard core militants who had infiltrated across the LOC from the Pakistan side were eliminated. They were heavily armed and extremely well equipped with explosives, AK-47 rifles and communication equipment” added the spokesman.
Spokesman said, “this act of Col Vasanth V and his radio operator LNk Sashi Kant Ganpath, in which they laid down their lives, is an outstanding example of bravery, courage and supreme sacrifice. This represents gallantry action of the highest order in true traditions of the Indian Army.”
Police said that yesterday’s infiltration bid, that was foiled by the troops, was a major incident of ingress. It said that the incident confirmed that militants were trying to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir in small groups. One senior police officer said that between 2000 and 3000 militants, equipped with sophisticated weapons and explosives, were across the border at Uri, Kupwara, Poonch, Rajouri, Akhnoor, Samba and Hiranagar for an opportunity to cross into Jammu and Kashmir.
The officer said that bigger groups of militants trying to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir in the near future could not be ruled out because of the campaign against Jehadis having been launched by Gen. Parvez Musharraf in Pakistan after the recent crackdown by the troops on Lal Masjid
