| Mahbooba reacts to Azad’s statement | | PDP for discussion on self rule, threatens to boycott working groups | |
Srinagar, Aug 11 : Apparently reacting to the recent statement of chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Peoples Democratic Party, one of the key ally in coalition government, today threatened to boycott recently constituted working groups on Kashmir if the `self rule’ proposal of the party was not given a due consideration. In a statement, issued here from New Delhi, PDP president Mahbooba Mufti said that Self Rule for Jammu and Kashmir was a well considered option presented by her party as a way out for its people to come out of their problems. “If at any point of time the PDP got an impression that its point of view was being blocked without being discussed and accommodated in the negotiation process, it would be futile for it to participate in the special groups”, she said . The PDP president claimed that the proposal for Self Rule was already on the agenda of the dialogue initiated by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and could, therefore, not be wished away. “People could have differences with the proposal but it cannot be out rightly ruled out if a lasting solution to Kashmir is the objective”, she said adding that the PDP had come into the political arena of the state with its demand for Peace with Dignity and over the years the self rule proposal had, through discussions within the party forums and inputs from different quarters, evolved as a workable and pragmatic road map to achieve this goal. She said the party had passed a formal resolution approving the concept of Self Rule and establishing a historical prospective for it. The PDP President said the proposal was formally launched at the first Round Table held by the Prime Minister in New Delhi. Subsequently, in the 2nd Round at Srinagar, the party reiterated this position providing more details. The party President said at a time when dialogue process has been initiated between the People of Jammu and Kashmir, Government of India and various groups are constituted by the Government to deliberate upon different aspects of the problem and come up with possible solutions, it is highly inappropriate to rule out any proposition. Such an approach could dilute the seriousness of the dialogue process. Mahbooba said Kashmir has suffered for too long as a result of the efforts to under play the political dimension of the problem. The PDP, she said, proved since 2002 that the Development Agenda could be carried forward without sacrificing the political aspirations of the people of the State. A similar approach, she said, needs to be followed if we want to see an end to the economic and political problems that have been costing heavily in terms of human life and property. Mahbooba reiterated that the improvement in security situation will have a meaning for the common man only when it is translated into relief for him at his home, the work place and the street. Unless the reduction in violence level is reflected in day today life of ordinary citizens, the claims about it will lack credibility. |
