| 'Media power' throws City out of gear | | | ET REPORTER Jammu, Aug 2: It was "media power" spilled on the roads this afternoon that the routine life went out of gear in the city with maddening traffic jams and giving no clue of the cause of rare protest. The routine traffic in the city went haywire this afternoon with thousands of vehicles smashing against each other as the vital link between two parts of the city –the Tawi Bridge –was blocked by the protestors. With a persisting jam while the vehicles had to queue up from Satwari Chowk on the end to Manda on the other end, those which tried to divert on the inner roads created quite a mess out of it. The Traffic cops were caught unawares as it all happened suddenly. With the thickening of jam and the officials getting exasperated, later it was learnt that the media persons had staged a dharna at Bikram chown blocking the traffic on both sides of the river. It was the thrashing out of a cameraman of local cable network JK Channel which led to the protest. The JK Channel team had approached the Director Health Services for his comment on an issue. The Director, alleged the scribes, instead of giving a comment thrashed the cameraman and broke down his expensive equipment. Learning about the incident, many scribes joined the protest at Bikram Chowk seeking an explanation from the Director. The Police and other senior official rushed to the spot but no avail. Later the Director Health Services, the media persons informed, owned up the slip-up and offered to get a new camera to the scribe. The scribes however said that the question is not about the camera but they were annoyed over the manner in which the health department, particularly the directorate and the officers of the Government Medical College were behaving with the responsible media persons. The said channel was working on a story of the Government Medical College. The scribes associated with the channel said that the authorities at the Government Medical College have put a signboard on the gate which reads that media persons are not allowed to enter the casualty ward. The scribes said that they do not have any personal interest in casualty or any other ward of the Hospital but are required to visit there to discharge their professional duties.
