| Life paralysed as Jammu observes complete bandh | | | Jammu, Aug 11 : Normal life was thrown out of gear in the winter capital of the state as the city observed almost complete shutdown in response to call given by Jammu Bar Association, which is on strike from last 45 days in support of their demand transfer of Sex Scandal case from Srinagar to Jammu. Reports pouring in from various localities of Jammu city revealed that shops and other business establishments remained closed in most parts of the city, while the commercial traffic was also out of the road. The one day bandh call was given by Jammu Bar Association and backed by traders’ federations of the capital. It was learnt that lawyers also took out to streets and staged protest demonstration in various parts of the city including the High Court road, which was blocked since early morning. Members of BAJ gathered outside the main gate of High Court and marched towards the main city. Raising slogans in support of them demand the protestors marched through the main rods and were even seen enforcing the call at some places. The agitating lawyers even broke the window glasses of over a dozen commercial vehicles including two buses of Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation and ransacked some shops at Vikram Chowk. Shutters were down in most parts of this city and traffic was off the roads. Schools, colleges and other educational institutions were also closed, while attendance in the government offices remained thin. The association is spearheading the almost two month-old strike by lawyers to demand the transfer of the cases related to the sex scandal, in which several top politicians and officials are allegedly involved, to Jammu. Lawyers resorted to the shutdown call after their efforts to get the case transferred to Jammu were frustrated. Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig, who is also law minister, has ruled out the transfer of the cases and told lawyers to resume their work. The Jammu Bar Association has rejected his appeal. The Jammu lawyers began an agitation after one of their colleagues, Sunil Sethi, claimed he was threatened in Srinagar when he had gone there to plead the case of his brother Anil Sethi, a former additional advocate general and an accused in the sex scam. |
