GMC mortuary - where the dead can't rest in peace

Jammu | June 30
It may appear astonishing, but it is true that corpses 'laid to rest' in the mortuary of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu are not safe. The reason: insecure building structure.
Huge cracks which have appeared on the walls of the mortuary building are itself an indication that structure is unsafe and could collapse any time. Failure of the hospital administration can be gauged from the fact that nothing has been initiated so far to mend the unsafe structure.
"It would be matter of great embarrassment for all of us and hospital administration in particular, when whole of the world would come to know that GMC mortuary at Jammu have collapsed and an operation is on to rescue the corpses from rubbles", said Gopal Singh, an attendant who had come to collect the body of his relative from mortuary. He further said that administration has even failed to provide facilities to the persons who are alive then what to say of dead.
"For others it's not a matter of concern as they are not related to the dead, but for those who are related it's a serious issue attached with their sentiments. Nobody likes to see the corpse of a near and dear lying under the rubbles, as it would be a sort of great disrespect to the already dead soul", said Kartar Chand, a visibly upset looking man who had come to collect the body of his nephew. He was also very critical of the hospital management for not mending the structure before the strike of any such tragedy which could happen any time.
One of the employee at mortuary, on the condition of anonymity informed that the cracks on the walls of mortuary are getting wider with the passing days and even water is leaking continuously from the ceiling at the entrance of mortuary. He also expressed concern over the safety of building especially in the wake of coming monsoon season, as it could further weaken the structure. "We are working here under the constant fear, as the condition of the building is deteriorating with the passage of time. Authorities have turned a blind eye towards this issue, forgetting one thing that alive are also present here," he lamented.
When "EARLY TIMES" scribe contacted HoD Forensics (GMC) Dr A U Sheikh, he refused to accept the responsibility, while the Principal Dr. Mumtaz Goni informed that the issue is under active consideration of administration and soon repair would be taken up. She also confessed that problem has caused due to the faulty plumbing work there.
