Mehbooba writes to Anil Ambani
‘Halt shifting of DAIICT from Srinagar’
8/3/2007 11:51:12 PM
Srinagar, Aug 3 – Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President & Member Parliament, Ms Mehbooba Mufti has asked the Reliance Dhirubhai Ambani Group to hold back its decision of shifting the proposed Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DAIICT) from Srinagar to Orissa, given some difficulties in the clearance of the project.

In an email to the Reliance chief, Anil Ambani, Ms Mufti has asked him to intervene in the matter and do not allow the prestigious project to get spoiled because of bureaucratic wrangles. "I am looking forward to your cooperation and support in this important matter as the establishment of this Institute is of vital importance for the development of modern IT education and trained human resource in our State," she wrote.

In her email, Ms Mufti has told Anil Ambani that the matter regarding early clearance of the project, for which 50 acres of land have already been earmarked near Ompora (Budgam), has been taken up with the State Government and she is expecting early positive action on the issue in the larger interest of the State. "We are pursuing the matter at various levels to get the road-blocks, hampering the establishment of the Institute, cleared," she stated asking Anil Ambani to prevent his Group from acting in a hurry in the matter.

Ms Mufti said given the dearth of skilled manpower and lack of state-of-the-art infrastructural facilities, progressive interventions from the private sector like the establishment of modern IT and other skill-enhancement institutes in the State is of crucial importance for its youth. She said such interventions would also help the State to tackle the growing challenge of the unemployment. She said any delay in the establishment of the Institute, second of its kind in the country after DAIICT Ahmadabad, would be a great loss to the State.

In 2004, the State Government had reached an agreement with the Reliance Group for the establishment of DAIICT at Ompora near Srinagar Airport. However, after the change of guard in 2005, the project got delayed forcing the Reliance Group to shot off a letter to the State Chief Secretary asking him that if the Jammu & Kashmir Government is not interested in the proposed Institute, it would be shifted to Orissa.
