| Cop, drug mafia nexus surfaces | | Consignments delivered in official vehicle | | EARLY TIMES REPORTER
Jammu | Aug 4: Eyes have been raised in several circles following revelation of an alleged nexus between a responsible cop manning a Chowki and some Srinagar based drug mafia.
According to the sources the drug mafia has its focused working area adjoining to the general bus stand, the railways station and some other parts including the national highway.
The sources said the chowki officer posted in a chowki falling under the North zone of the city for the last one and half years has been allegedly providing shelter to the criminals involved in illegal activities within the jurisdiction of the police post.
The highly placed sources said the drug racket run by a gangster and involved in several crimes in the city and injured in an attack some time back has roped in the chowki officer. The Chowki Officer, the sources said, has been shielding the gangster, several other drug peddlers besides those running a net work of smugglers involved in smuggling narcotics substances.
Sources said that on an average the narcotics substances including charas, ganja, capsules, corex and other items worth thousands of rupees are exchanged daily within the network of the drug peddlers and the addicts.
Sources close to the network revealed that smaller couriers and the peddlers even dare to smuggle the consignments to the smaller towns like Udhampur, Kathua Rajouri and Poonch and also bring other consignments from these areas for their regular customers. Sources alleged that 'the easy money' could be motive and the inspiration that have allured some of the bigwigs to venture in this trade. Names of some known traders are also linked with this unholy nexus, the sources maintained.
Giving further information the sources revealed that a Srinagar based drug mafia who is a known businessman is involved in this nexus and is making a good harvest from this unholy trade in the city of temples in association with a chowki officer and a gangster who also had become a medium in delivering the consignment in official vehicles.
Sources said 7-8 persons are active in the racket who supply the narcotics with out any fear because the chowki officer shelter them and even sometimes the said chowki officer use his official vehicle for supplying drugs. Sources also added that some time back some people had complained in this regard in the DGP office but due to his (DGP's) transfer no action was taken.
The racket members are so sharp and use their power if they find anybody else trying to sell drugs in the city. Sources said that if they come across any such other gang operating in the business they are shown the door and some months two such persons who were deliberately involved in a forgery case were sent to lock up in the District jai.
Reports said some Srinagar based persons who are involved in the racket smuggle the drugs from Srinagar and out of state and also deliver the consignment to a gangster in the Jammu city with the help of chowki officer.
