Ultras get GPS guidance for intrusion
8/5/2007 12:37:16 AM

Surinder Raina
Jammu, Aug 4: Those days have gone when militants used any local person as a Guide for infiltration and to establish contacts with their associates. With the advent of newer technology the ultras have also gone high tech.
Discarding the use of guides, the militants make use of Global Positioning System (GPS) which take them to their destinations. This device is just like a mobile phone with a long cable that connects to the sync port on the bottom of the Dell Axim. This is a satellite based navigation system made up of a network of 24 Satellites placed by the U.S. Department of Defence. GPS was originally intended for military application.
GPS is a small computer chip that translates the incoming signal into usable information. The chip is attached to a built-in or external antenna and a power source of some kind. GPS receiver comes in a number of shapes and sizes.
According to sources, security forces had recovered two GPS devices from the militants in just six months from Rajouri and Poonch Districts. Sources told that GPS helped them to find the exact way to go and to contact their associates without any help from local Guides. Sources said that the reason behind thinking of using this system by militants is shortage of Guides who helped them to reach their destination. Since the locals have stopped helping the militants, the ultras have devised a new strategy to reach out to their destination and the targeted persons.
According to sources, the shortage of local guides has forced the mentors across the border to equip the ultras with such sophisticated gadgets that would help in reaching to the required person and the location without being noticed by the security forces .The training centres operating across the border are imparting training to the terrorists of these high tech equipment before pushing them for subversive activities to this side of the border, the sources further added. The GPS is most reliable and cheap system and there is no subscription fee or setup charges to use it, the sources revealed.
Sources said that with the help of this system they remain in contact with other associates who help them in case of any trouble and how reliable this system is that it works in any weather condition. The benefit they are getting that no one knows about their presence in the area and they silently accomplish their mission and fled away. It is so effective that its frequency is not traced by army and no one knows about their whereabouts.
