| Dal symbol of environmental degradation’ | | Governor for bold initiatives to arrest global warming | | Srinagar, August 05 Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) S. K. Sinha today called for bold initiatives to arrest global warming, saying that it has to be a global campaign. Speaking at a function organized by Rotary Club of Kashmir here this evening, the Governor cautioned that if corrective and preventive measures are not taken, the survival of humanity will be in jeopardy. He, however, exuded confidence that given the efforts underway in this regard by United Nations and community of individual Nations, there is no room for pessimism. International programmes to control global warming are gaming momentum, he added. General Sinha lauded the responsibility taken over by the younger generation in highlighting the environmental concerns and said that if they would not take lead the future generations will suffer. Dwelling on the progress achieved in past two centuries in the fields of scientific development, the Governor said that this has taken the toll in the shape of environmental degradation. Growing population and alarming pollution has added to the scenario, he maintained. He referred to the melting of glaciers saying this will result in drying of rivers and soaring of sea level by 3-feet posing threat to port cities. He made mention of glaciers melting in North Pole and excessive exploration of mountains where even mountaineers feel pollution due to left over garbage. This calls for adequate preventive measures, he said. The Governor also referred to the level of pollution in picturesque Kashmir and said unfortunately Dal Lake has emerged symbol of environmental degradation. He called for massive awareness and involvement, saying that everything should not be left to governments as every individual and group has a responsibility to play their part. He sounded optimistic about the measures being taken to arrest pollution by various initiatives like environmental friendly fuel and battery driven vehicles. General Sinah complimented Rotary Club for organizing the awareness programmes. President, Rotary Club, Dr. Amit Wanchoo and Vice President, Dr. Abdul Hamid Zargar also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the importance of awareness programmes to stress the need for arresting global warming. The Governor unveiled artistic expression of eminent artist of the valley, Mr. Malik Sajjad. He also honoured several persons including Mrs. Nighat Pandit for social work and Mr. Arshad Javeed of Greater Kashmir plus for journalism. He also gave away 30 sets of book to students of orphans. Prominent among those present included Mr. Bashart Bukhari, MLC Mr. M. Y. Tarigami, MLA Mr. Mohammad Shaffi Pandit, Chairman Public Service Commission and School Children. Student speakers spoke on the global warming concerns while a musical programme highlighted the importance of preventive measures.
