'Crucial role for region's leadership in changing equations'
Great hope, promise ahead for JK people: Sayeed
8/6/2007 12:03:14 AM
Jammu, August 05 – Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said after witnessing uncertainties for almost six decades, Jammu & Kashmir today is at the crossroads of historic opportunity where great hope and promise lies ahead for its people. "The subcontinent's turbulent history makes it imperative for both, India and Pakistan to resolve their mutual conflicts and forge a strong alliance towards achieving the desired level of human development and economic prosperity for the region," he said.
Addressing a day-long convention of the party's provincial office-bearers here today, Sayeed said peace and progress in the subcontinent have, probably, been never as critically linked with stability in Jammu & Kashmir as they are today. "Obviously, the future would now solely be determined by the region's political leadership on how they cope up with the challenge amid fast-changing equations," he said and added the fact that the reconciliation process has endured quite a few serious setbacks in the recent past, reinforces the optimism that it is headed for consolidation. "People in Jammu & Kashmir are the highest stake-holders in the success of this venture as it has been our fate to live through the miseries of violence," he said.
Sayeed emphasized that the present peace initiative, launched by the then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee from Srinagar in April 2003, is markedly different from the ill-fated ones launched by the two countries from time to time over the past few decades. "Its contours match the imperatives of the existing global scenario unlike in the past when rigidity and inflexibility refused to yield space to pragmatism and malleability," he said and added that a ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) and the international border, from Kathua to Kargil, has been in place and is working to the great relief of the people of these areas.
Sayeed said a number of confidence building measures (CBM), on various fronts, have either been set in motion or are in the pipeline and the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh has time and again reiterated his commitment to carry ahead the confidence building process. "The positive impact of these CBMs on the ground in Jammu & Kashmir is distinctly visible," he said and added that the constituency for peace and reconciliation is becoming larger and louder in the State. He said the momentum of the peace process has strengthened the popular belief among the people in its envisioned objectives. "An amicable and peaceful settlement of the Kashmir problem is coming into sight for the first time," he said and added it is this belief that has made the process credible.
Sayeed said while PDP has played a modest role in ensuring popular legitimacy of the peace process within and outside the State, the Congress leadership and the Central Government complimented and carried forward the initiatives with sincerity of purpose. "The fruits of peace and prosperity would be shared not only by the people from all the regions of the State, but the whole subcontinent as well," he said.
Senior BSP leaders Dr Gafoor and Hans Raj Chalotra from Akhnoor, alongwith hundreds of their supporters joined PDP on this occasion.
Senior PDP leaders Master Tassaduq Hussain, Murtaza Khan, Imtiyaz Banday, Mohammad Sharief Tariq, Sayed Asghar Hussain, Chowdhary Zulfikar and others also addressed the convention
