Party finds difficult to decide between Baig and Mir
8/6/2007 12:12:03 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORTER
Jammu, Aug 6: With the possibility of cabinet expansion being round the corner, race has begin among the cadres of both coalition partners to find a place in the council of ministers which is expanding perhaps for the last time during present term of the legislature.

Sources said that the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has obtained an approval from the Congress high command and therefore has cleared the decks for the cabinet expansion. A meeting between Azad and the coalition partner Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is yet to take place for making a consensus on the nominees, said sources. Sources further added that Azad and Mufti are most likely to meet or exchange notes on the names of PDP nominees for the ministry as Azad is reportedly given free hand by his party to make a choice.

All eyes are, however, focused on the troublesome duo of Muzaffar Hussain Baig and the Ghulam Hassan Mir of the Peoples Democratic Party on the probability of their induction in the cabinet. It is reliably leant that Azad is likely to induct only one cabinet minister and four ministers of state during the expansion which may also witness some reshuffle as well.

The lone Cabinet Minister to be inducted during the expansion is certain to be from the Peoples Democratic Party while both the coalition partners will share two more Ministers of State each.

Sources said that induction of the either of the two –Baig or Mir –may kick off yet another crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party. In case of Baig's induction, Mir is certain to revolt and the vice versa. "Discussions are on in the party to overcome this problem as PDP can not afford a revolt within the organisation when elections are just round the corner", said a PDP leader. He pointed out that the party was earlier considering moving one its cabinet ministers or either of Baig and Mir to the post of Speaker but now with the Legislative Council Chairman elected from PDP has closed that option.

Sources also pointed out that the PDP is extremely worried about that the cabinet expansion as any two or three of its leaders finding the ministerial post will annoy half a dozen others who have been expecting their rehabilitation since long.

Meanwhile a hectic lobbying is on in the Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party legislators to get a chance of the last stint as minister in the present government. While the Congress leaders are activating their New Delhi channels, the PDP legislators yet to crack into the minds of party leadership to read as what is going on.
