Leh Monks' murder story cracked in 31 hours

Jammu, Aug 5: Leh, the cold desert of Himalayas has one special feature: normally crime does not take place there and if it happens the investigating agencies do not take much to solve the case. This has happened yet again.

In an exemplary case of speedy investigation, Leh Police has solved a double murder case within 31 hours by arresting two accused Nepalis. Meanwhile DGP, Shri Kuldeep Khoda, has announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 in favour of the Police party which arrested the murderers.

According to SSP Leh, Mr. Alok Kumar, during the intervening night of August 3 and 4, two persons Lama Nawang Chultim 32, R/O Mulbek Kargil and Lama Tenzin Gilik 31, son of Thinles, resident of Timisgam Leh were found dead in their rooms at Alchi, falling under the jurisdiction of Police Station Leh.

He said that while Lama Nawang Chultim was Manager at Sumtseg Restaurant, Lama Tenzin Gilik was a Ticket seller in Alchi Gompa.

A case FIR No: 181/07, under section 302 RPC was registered in Police Station Leh in this regard and investigations taken up, he added.

He stated that during investigations, it came into light that the murders had been committed by two Nepalese waiters working in Sumtseg restaurant with some sharp edged weapon, who after commission of the crime were absconding.

Identifying the accused as Gajendra Kumar Khatri alias Ganesh, son of Padam Bahadur Khatri and Parmod Budhataki, son of Chander Budhataki, residents of Village Marke, District Saleyan, Nepal, he disclosed that hunt was launched to nab them and in this regard crash messages with full description of the accused was flashed to all district Police Headquarters, including Jammu and Himachal Pradesh and all Police establishments were alerted.

He said that few persons acquainted with the accused were also kept at various Police Stations and Posts for identification, so that the duo could be nabbed before they flee out of the state and Posters of the accused with complete description were rushed to all Police establishments and media.

He stated that these efforts of the Police bore fruit and the absconding duo were intercepted and arrested near Police Post Spang, about 265 Kilometers away from Alichi, during the wee hours today, when they were trying to flee from Leh towards Manali in Himachal Pradesh.

He revealed that Rs 66,000 in cash were recovered from possession of the accused who during preliminary questioning confessed their crime.

He stated that with the arrest of the accused, Leh police has managed to solve a blind Double murder case within 31 hours of its commission.

Meanwhile, Director General of Police J&K, Mr. Kuldeep Khoda has announced cash reward of Rs 50,000 in favour of the Police Party which affected the arrest of accused within 31 hours.
