| Nimesh reviews working of Labour Department | | 522 prosecutions launched against defaulters | | JAMMU AUG-11 Principal Secretary Labour and Employment B L Nimesh today reviewed the working of the Labour Department at a meeting with Assistant Commissioners of Jammu province. Labour Commissioner Pritpal Singh Betab, M Y Zargar and Bachan Singh Deputy Labour Commissioners were also present. It was stated at the meeting that under workmen’s compensation act, 731 cases were pending at the end of December last while as 140 fresh cases were received during January to June this year. Of these,124 cases were disposed off and Rs.206.22 lakh disbursed as compensation to the dependents and the disabled persons. Under the Wages Act, 72 cases were settled and Rs.13.99 lakh disbursed to workers as delayed wages. A total number of 68038 shops stood registered with the department at the beginning of 2006 while as 1217 more shops were registered during the first six months of this year. The Department realized a revenue of Rs.28.50 lakh so far and launched 522 prosecutions against various defaulters. Nimesh emphasized the need for being more mobile in the field and directed the officers to conduct result oriented inspections in order to see that benefits laid down under the Labour laws reach to the working class. He also directed the officers to make summary trials of the cases and ensure early disposal to redress the grievances of the working class. Earlier Nimesh and senior officers of the Department visited several units in Industrial Estates Bari Brahmana .
