Police cane charges demonstrators at GMC
8/7/2007 12:04:17 AM

JAMMU August 6
Police today resorted to minor cane charge to control the mob at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu which was protesting against the alleged harassment of doctors. The protestors alleged that the doctors were unnecessarily harassing the attendants of a patient who was brought to hospital yesterday.
Relatives and friends of Sirvinder Singh, resident of Kunjwani, held a protest demonstration and were shouting slogans against doctors for their alleged harassment. They were alleging that doctors were not attending the patient regularly and were harassing the attendants.
Sirvinder was bitten by a snake yesterday at his residence at Kunjwani and was immediately taken to a near by doctor after which he was shifted to GMC where he was kept in emergency till this morning. He was shifted to ward number 12 this morning after his condition started improving.
His relatives alleged that the doctors attending Sirvinder were unnecessarily harassing the attendants. “We were asked to get a particular medicine or syringe by doctors and when we got that the doctors asked us to change the medicine”, said an angry demonstrator adding that this was repeated many times.
“We are here to attend a patient and these doctors were treating us as we are their servants. How can you accept that an attendant will up down these stairs and go outside the hospital to get a medicine and then again move to get these medicines changed”, he added.
These doctors hardly take care of the patents added another angry attendant complaining that the medical college is not meant for poor and needy.
When the demonstrators created panic and started creating mess inside the hospital premises, the police intervened and tried to convince them. However, when the situation went beyond control after the scuffle between the demonstrators and police, police resorted to cane charge.
No injuries have, however, been reported.
