Security beefed up in Valley ahead of I Day
8/7/2007 10:42:54 PM

SRINAGAR:
Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir are taking extraordinary steps to thwart any attempts by separatist guerrillas to disrupt the celebrations of India's 60th year of Independence on Aug 15.
In the backdrop of the fact that trans-border infiltration into the state has increased this year compared to the corresponding period ending July last year, additional deployments of local police and paramilitary troops are being made to secure the various venues across the Kashmir Valley where official parades and flag hoisting ceremonies will be held on the day.
The focus of the security agencies in the summer capital here is the Bakhshi Stadium where the main Independence Day parade is held every year.
Search and seek operations have been mounted around the Bakhshi Stadium where the security forces are conducting house to house searches, frisking pedestrians and all vehicles to check the movement of the militants.
Additional checking points, manned by the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the police have come up at many places in Srinagar, a city with a population of 1.2 million.
'Our security arrangements are not only physical like conducting random searches etc, but these are intelligence-based also,' said Farooq Ahmed, deputy inspector general of police (DIG) central Kashmir.
'All the station house officers are maintaining a close rapport with the public and there is a continuous flow of intelligence upon which our operations are based. It is specifically through these coordinated efforts that we have been able to maintain a modicum of peace here,' said the police officer.
'We have succeeded in keeping the terrorists on the run.'
In addition, closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs) have also been installed at and around all vital installations and busy market places in the city, Ahmed said.
