Tenants say Evacuee department harassing them
8/7/2007 10:58:50 PM

Jammu, July 19
Evacuees Property Tenants Welfare Society has sharply criticized the Evacuee Property Department authorities for unnecessarily harassing its tenants by issuing them eviction notices and forcing them to enter into fresh rent deed with the department, on exorbitantly enhanced rents.
In a meeting of the deputation comprising executive members of the society with the Custodian General Evacuee Property, Kafiat Hussain Rizvi here today Chairman of the society Krishanlal Gupta stressed upon implementing the proposal of the association submitted earlier in their meting with the Revenue Secretary and the Custodian General for granting long term lease in favour of the EP tenants, to favourably consider which the latter had assured the society. But instead of implementing the proposal in this regard even after lapse of a very long time the authorities have started issuing notices to the tenants for entering into fresh rent deeds, falling which their allotments would be cancelled, Mr. Gupta complained.
Banarsi Das Angral President of the Society complained that uncalled for notices being issued to the tenants in occupation of the properties for a very long time is only aimed at harassing the tenants. Sh Rattan Sawhney Treasurer of the society contended that the insistence by the department for increase in the rent on the additional accommodation constructed by some tenants on their own expenses, with due permission from the department several years ago, is totally unjustified and tantamount to double penalty on them.
Sh Nazir Ahmed sr. Vice President and Suraj Sharma Gen. Secretary apprised that the condition of EP houses in certain cases has highly worsened for want of any repairs conducted by the department. Even in the cases of tenants below poverty, line in respect of whom authorities had assured undertaking necessary repairs, nothing has been done so far.
The other executive members who expressed their views regarding the problem being faced by EP tenants were Sh. Mansa Ram Vice President, Mohd. Sharief and Romesh Chander Sharma.
The custodian General and the custodian Jammu A R Vani who was also present gave assurance of giving faovouable consideration to the proposal for long term lease as well as undertaking early repairs of highly damaged buildings.
