| Talwara migrants decry government of its discriminatory attitude | | Police stop procession to proceed to Jammu, agitators cane-charged | | Jammu | AUG 7 FAILURE Of the Jammu and Kashmir Government to honour the Supreme Court directions has forced thousands of migrants, who faced exodus in 1999 from the upper reaches of militancy-infested districts of Jammu region, to come on the streets. The non-serious attitude of the government has forced these migrants, putting up at Talwara area of Reasi district in miserable conditions, to indulge in human trafficking. According to migrants, the state coalition government never implemented the orders of the Supreme Court regarding the rehabilitation of Jammu region migrants and providing relief at par with other migrants. Both the former Chief Minister Mufti Mohd Sayed and present CM Ghulam Nabi Azad have failed to honour the directions of the Apex Court to treat the migrants from various militancy infested areas at par with the Kashmiri Migrants. In 1999 thousands of people had to migrate from upper reaches of Doda, Udhampur, Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu province. These 2202 families of about 11000 members are registered migrants and are living in Talwara, Surankote, Pauni, Udhampur, Gool, Doda, Sangaldan and Beli Charana. Chairman, Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party Professor, Bhim Singh, whose party is pleading the case of these migrants said following failure of the government to implement the SC decisions he has decided to file a contempt suit before Supreme Court against Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta. Talwara Migrants Committee spokesperson, Balwan Singh has demanded compensation of Rs 1500 per migrant for last 40 months (Since March 2004) as cost of ration,K oil and cattle fodder. The migrants accused the government for its continuous discriminatory policy towards Jammu region and threatened to intensify its stir if it failed to implement the directions of the Supreme Court without any further delay. Meanwhile, a rally of the migrants that was on way to Jammu from Reasi was stopped by the police at Aghar Baba Jitto. However, the agitating migrants were adamant on proceeding further. The police had to resort to lathicharge and lobbed teargass shells on the protesting migrants.
