EARLY TIMES REPORTER
Jammu, Aug 7: Amidst stepped up security network across the state in run up to Independence Day celebrations, all eyes or focussed on the efforts of the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad as whether he breaks the precedence of shut down on national days in the Kashmir Valley .
The main official function of the Independence Day shall be held in Srinagar where presently the seat of the government is. More than a decade and half, the Srinagar City has been observing almost a complete shutdown as the separatists call for observing "Black Day" on the Independence Day. The chairman of hardliner faction of separatist Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Geelani has already called a shutdown on Aug 15.
Since Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has been able to pull big crowds on many national days, it being keenly watched as what look Srinagar City wears this Independence Day.
Meanwhile, ahead of the national day, the security agencies are on their toes across the state to ward off the incidents of violence. With intelligence inputs and documents obtained following the Uri intrusion bid, the focus of the security forces is more in Srinagar and other districts in the Valley which appear on the hit list of the militants.
The focus of the security agencies in the summer capital here is the Bakhshi Stadium where the main Independence Day parade is held every year.
Search and seek operations have been mounted around the Bakhshi Stadium where the security forces are conducting house to house searches, frisking pedestrians and all vehicles to check the movement of the militants.
Additional checking points, manned by the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the police have come up at many places in Srinagar, a city with a population of 1.2 million.
'Our security arrangements are not only physical like conducting random searches etc, but these are intelligence-based also,' said Farooq Ahmed, deputy inspector general of police (DIG) central Kashmir.
'All the station house officers are maintaining a close rapport with the public and there is a continuous flow of intelligence upon which our operations are based. It is specifically through these coordinated efforts that we have been able to maintain a modicum of peace here,' said the police officer.
'We have succeeded in keeping the terrorists on the run.'
In addition, closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs) have also been installed at and around all vital installations and busy market places in the city, Ahmed said.
