| SRTC gets into profit mode | | | EARLY TIMES REPORTER Jammu, August 8: Minister for Transport Hakeem Mohd Yaseen today asked transport authorities to ensure hazard free transport on roads by conducting regular inspections to check over loading and other essentialities. Hakeem was addressing a meeting of officers of transport and other line departments of Jammu division here today at meeting. Minister also reviewed the working of the transport department on the occasion.
Reviewing the progress registered by the department under various heads, Minister called for providing better and safe public transport by strictly enforcing Road Safety rules.
He said government is not averse to promote private transport and expects that they would contribute their bit in ensuring safe journey for the commuters on the state roads.
He also reiterated that unemployed youth would be encouraged to enter the transport sector which has great potential ahead in the backdrop of expanding road network in the sate.
Hakeem asked the officers to prefer youth particularly in hill districts of Doda, Ramban, Reasi, Kishtwar, Poonch and Rajouri while issuing new permits, adding that such a policy would largely help in putting a hold on the increasing unemployment problem in the state.
Stressing for keeping a close check on passenger transport, Mr. Hakeem asked the officers to check over loading as it leads to tragic mishaps.
He said adequate number of vehicles should be made available on each route so that the drivers do not get the opportunity to resort to overloading, adding that any body found violating Road safety rules should be dealt under the law.
Later the meeting was informed that the department has realized Rs 8.87 crore on account of vehicle taxes during first three months of the current financial year, against Rs 8.13 crore for the corresponding period last year.
Among others Secretary Transport Mr. Dalip Singh, Joint Transport Commissioner Mr. G. A. Sofi, RTO Lakhanpur Ashwani Khajuria, RTO Jammu , F.C. Bhagat and other senior officers of Transport Department were also present on the occasion.
