| Border Resident: Living In The Line Of Fire | | | Ajay Meenia Jammu | Aug 9: There seems no end to the problems of the border areas. The inhabitants of RS Pura border who have been the victim of the frequent firing from the across the border in the past are confronted with several other problems. The residents had heaved a sigh of relief following ceasefire on the borders; little knowing what was for them in the store.
With the construction of concrete dam on the zero line by the Pak authorities with poor drainage system, the vast chunk of land on this side of the border stand submerged leaving little chance to the farmers to cultivate the same and whatever land could be cultivated the crops suffered heavy damages due to the gushing water coming out of the dam. The entire water of the dam instead of passing through the drain flows through the agricultural lands making it uncultivable. The miseries of the farmers did not end here. Following erection of fence along the international border by the BSF too have added to the problems for farmers living near the borders as majority of them have been deprived to cultivate their agricultural land.
According to the farmers of the area there is around a thousand acres of land lying waste following erection of fence by the Border Security Force along the international border. They further said that case was all together different on other side of the border where farmers fully cultivate their land along with the zero line.
While talking to Early Times some of the farmers including Uttam Singh, Channa Ram and Sukhchain Singh said that their thousand acres of land situated on the fence is not being cultivated by us due to the callous attitude of the BSF and the Army. They further said that the troops ignored the orders of high officers in allowing these farmers to cultivate their land.
When contacted Commandant BSF of 129 Bn K N Suyal said several measures are afoot to allow the affected farmers to cultivate their land. He said the farmers on the borders would be allowed to go to their fields for cultivation between 7 am to 7 pm adding that the outside labourers engaged in cultivation of land would also be issued Identity cards
