| Bodies of three soldiers found 40 years after crash | | | Chandigarh, Aug 10: Forty years after they were killed in an aircraft crash near Chandrabhaga Peak, an Army expedition has recovered the mortal remains of three soldiers from the inhospitable terrain of Lahaul valley in Himachal Pradesh.
Code named operation Punaruthan-III, the expedition launched with the specific task of retrieval of bodies of the missing soldiers of the 1968 an 12 crash retrieved the mortal remains of the trio on August nine from a glaciated area at an altitude of over 17,500 feet near Chandrabhaga Peak, a defence spokesman said here today.
The expedition, which was launched under the leadership of Major Nishant Kumar on August two, got success after a detailed search of the area for five days.
Efforts are being made to confirm the identity of the deceased soldiers from the documents and identity cards recovered near the bodies.
"Thereafter, the next of kin of the deceased soldiers will be intimated of the recovery of the bodies. The mortal remains of the three soldiers will be escorted to their native places and last rites conducted with full military honours", he said.
On February 7, 1968 an AN-12 aircraft of the Indian Air Force had taken off from Chandigarh, on a routine logistics sortie with 102 persons on board to Leh. The aircraft was not able to negotiate the bad weather en route and hit the towering 6264-meter high Chandrabhaga Peak in Lahaul valley in Lahaul and Spiti district.
