| Parents to answer for child labour | | | Jammu, Aug 10: Set to make parents accountable for growing child labour problems across the country, the Central Advisory Board on Child Labour (CABCL) Friday said that the Child Labour Act will be amended to include parents as accused in case they engage their children in jobs for bread and butter.
"In order to make the law on child labour to deal with violators as stringent, the Act will be amended to bring parents under the preview of the law as violators," vice-chairperson, CABCL, Ministry of Labour & Employment, Jyoti Setiya told reporters here.
The parents of poor children, who are forced into child labour for earning bread and butter, were not falling under the ambit of the Act till now, she said adding "now they will also be brought under its ambit".
Jyoti, who is on a tour to Jammu & Kashmir to study the ground situation concerning child labour, said that parents too will punished for forcing their children into child labour besides their employees.
For the eradication of child labour and empowerment of poor children, a National Child Labour Project (NCLP) has been launched across the country and three districts - Jammu, Udhampur and Srinagar have been identified for implementation of this project in J&K.
These district would be given a grant of Rs 1 crore for the eradication of the child labour, she said adding that this scheme is aimed at rehabilitating the child labourers after disengaging them from their jobs and empower poor children for carving out a better future.
