He was like a father to me: Rape victim

DASTARDLY ACT: (Left) Gurudas Kamat allegedly raped Chhaya in the Tata Indigo (below) at Parksite in Vikhroli on August 5

“I will never ever go to their house again,” says Chhaya (14, name changed) from the municipal hospital bed, where she is recuperating. “They were like my extended family; I used to celebrate Raksha Bandhan and Bhaubeej with their son. They even bought me clothes on festivals.” She said she never believed Gurudas Kamat was capable of such a dastardly act, as he had always been a fatherly figure. She now wants to get back to the school as soon as possible.
Kamat’s family too has shunned him after he was caught with the girl in a compromising position and accused of raping her on August 5. He has been in police custody ever since.

Kamat’s wife Sarita (45, name changed) came to the Parksite police station to get him another set of clothes since the police wanted to send the clothes he had on for forensic tests. Till then, she had no idea why he was in custody. On being told, she went up to her husband and asked, “Tumhi he kai kele!” (What have you done!). Kamat said he was being framed and she left without a word. Ever since, Sarita and her 26-year-old polio-afflicted son have locked themselves up in their third floor apartment at Amrut Nagar in Ghatkopar.

Shaking car

The prime witnesses, security guards Chandrasen Singh (29) and Jakirulla Qureshi (25), said their suspicions were aroused when they saw a Tata Indigo car (MH-04-B-7715) shaking. As the windows had darkened glasses, they couldn’t see anything inside and hence pointed the headlights of their motorbikes on the car and saw a man on the back seat. Though the doors were locked, they opened by mistake when the accused tried to start the car and flee. The guards saw a young, naked girl in the back seat. When questioned further, the victim told them that Kamat was forcing himself upon her. The guards then handed him over to the police.

Kamat claims the victim’s mother had approached him a few months ago, seeking financial assistance of Rs 10,000 for a new house. But he had refused to pay and hence has been implicated in a rape charge. However, Kamat spilled the beans and confessed to sexually assaulting the girl, at the police station.

Doctors at the police hospital in Nagpada and the municipal hospital, where she is admitted, said there were no visible injury marks on the accused. The victim will be re-examined by forensic experts at Nagpada hospital again to gather more evidence.
