JSM (P) demands due share in Assembly for Jammu
8/10/2007 11:42:10 PM
Jammu, August 10: Reminding him of his promise of giving every region of the state its due, Jammu state Morcha (progressive) has urged upon Chief Minister to give Jammu region its due share of seats in the state Assembly.
In a statement issued here today by the party senior Vice president and Spokesperson Advocate Abdul Rouf Ganai welcomed the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's support for demand of reservation of seats for Scheduled Tribes including Gujjars, Bakarwals and Gadhies.
He however urged upon Azad to fulfill his promise of increasing the number of seats of Jammu Division at par with that of Kashmir to remove the disparity between the two regions.
Expressing concern over the CM's announcement of increasing the number of seats in each region by 25 percent of the existing number, JSM (P) spokesperson said that such a move would be taken as discrimination with Jammu region to which it is being subjected since ever.
He said keeping in view the population and area of Jammu division it deserves five to six more seats then Kashmir region adding that on average one MLA in Jammu represents 78 thousand voters living in 716 Sq KM area against 55 thousand population living in 346 sq Km area in Kashmir.
He said the present ratio is a great injustice done by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and the than Government at the centre upon the people of Jammu region, adding that the disparity in the number of seats in the Assembly is one of the main reason for the demand being raised by the people here for separate statehood .
