| Balraj Puri regrets decision withholding Panchayati elections | | |

Balraj Puri, Convenor Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has regretted the reported decision of the Home Department to withhold indefinitely the long overdue Panchayati elections in Jammu and Kashmir under the pretext of security threat.
Questioning the assumption of such threat, Puri asked whey the people of those areas where normalcy prevails should be denied benefits of decentralized democracy.
In a press statement issued here today, Puri demanded that the Panchayati Raj institutions in the state be brought at par with those of the other states of India and elected bodies be installed not only at panchayat levels but also at blocks and districts.
