| SKUAST (K) organizes workshop on development of saffron in J&K | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar, Aug 13 Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology,( SKUAST) Kashmir organized one day inter-institutional workshop on integrated development of saffron in J&K at Shalimar campus under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Anwar Alam. Director of SKUAST-K, Central Institute of Horticulture, Directors of Department of Agriculture, Kashmir and Jammu, Scientist of SKUAST-K and SKUAST-J, progressive farmers and stakeholders of Kashmir valley participated in the workshop Dr. A.R. Trag, Director Research, SKUAST-K welcomed the participants and deliberated upon the objective of interaction meeting. In the workshop Vinod Sharma, Director Agriculture, Jammu highlighted the importance of saffron cultivation in Jammu region with particular reference to Kishtwar area. Ghulam Hyder Bhat, Directior Agriculture, Kashmir showed concern on depletion of soil fertility and lack of proper marketing intelligence. Director Extension Education, SKUAST- K emphasized for importance of inter-institutional linkages in saffron improvement. Prof Alam while speaking on the occasion highlighted the importance of saffron crop and called upon the scientists, stakeholders and the farming community for increasing productivity through effective nutrient management and mechanization with effective quality control measures. He said on average 4.0kg/ha of productivity should be targeted and also advised to reduce the unit cost of production. The scientist of SKUAST-J, CITH and SKUAST-K made the deliberations on agenda items pertaining to vertical and horizontal expansion of saffron in J&K Dr. F.A. Nehvi, Senior Scientist, SKUAST-K through power point presentation highlighted Iranian methods of saffron cultivation and their benefits in enhancing saffron productivity.
