| Make DMA effective: Tarigami | | | Srinagar Aug 16: CPI (M) State Secretary and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has urged for an immediate and comprehensive rehabilitation plan for the affectees of Khundroo disaster. Tarigami has said that in view of the aftermath situations and quantum of losses caused to the property and standing crops in Khundroo and a number of adjacent villages a broad based and time bound rehabilitation programme be formulated and implemented as early as possible. He appealed the government to take up the issue with the union defence ministry as well so that proper rehabilitation of the sufferers is ensured in a time frame. The devastating fire in Khundroo ammunition depot has rendered hundreds of houses, cow sheds and other structures unsafe besides the agriculture crops and orchards have experienced sever damages and has put the rural farming community of these areas to hard tests, he added. Tarigami urged the government for pressing the home, revenue, agriculture and horticulture officers and officials into service to assess the losses and prepare a detailed report for onward submission so that the affectees are compensated without much loss of time. He said that the preliminary assessments indicate that it will take nearly six months for restoration of normal life in the affected areas which makes to presume that the farmers would be unable to reap the Kharief crops and go for Rabi sowing. This, he said has subjected the farmers and orchardists to deep apprehensions and agonies adding that evolving a concrete and well applicable disaster management policy and rehabilitation plan seems to be the only option to address and encompass the problems and needs of the affectees. He also said that tackling such disasters demands for an effective and efficient Disaster Management Authority in the state. Tarigami said that under a short term measure good tentage accommodation, provision of basic amenities including free ration and better health and hygienic conditions can be instrumental in providing respite and succor to the affected camp dwellers. CPI(M) State Secretary maintained that this human issue be tackled in humane way and appealed the administration, NGO’s, philanthropists and well off people to come forward and offer their collective services and help to the fire sufferers. He said that awaring the affected population of Khundroo and adjacent areas about every care to be taken in the aftermath scenario is imperative to avert any future loss of life or property.
