Thousands waiting for opportune time to cross’
8/17/2007 11:19:28 PM

Jammu | Aug 17
The strict vigil on the borders has reduced the infiltration bids from across the border this year so far as compared to last year’s 73 infiltration attempts this year the number has been much lower.
Despite melting on snow on the higher reaches the infiltrators are unable to make infiltration bids mainly due to the increased strength of forces and constant vigil on the borders.
However, the sources said that lowering of guard on the borders may be suicidal for the security of the state as thousands of infiltrators trained in several training camps set up by the Pakistani Army in PoK and also other places are waiting for an opportune time to cross this side of the state to give new impetus to the militant activities in the state
The sources said that infiltrators made several bids to cross over but the alert security forces thwarted their attempts and in many cases they the (infiltrators) had to retreat back to their territory
According to official reports Pakistani militants made seven abortive attempts to cross border this year so far from Rajouri, Poonch and Uri sectors. Sources said the militants made several attempts to cross this side of the border in July last but due to heavy fire they had to return back while few of them were eliminated. While making unsuccessful attempts the infiltrators fired upon the security jawans injuring two of them recently. Sources also said that some militants were also killed during infiltration and their bodies were carried back to Pakistan by their other fellow men
The decline in the infiltration attempts is also attributed to the fencing of the borders. However, the sources said that the militants have succeeded in some cases where they have been able to cut the fencing with some specially designed equipment.
According to sources the security agencies have already booked several messages that the militants are planning infiltration bids on a larger scale following pressure from their mentors across the border. He said following inputs about the movement of the infiltrators near the border, maximum alert has been sounded and round the vigil intensified. The sources maintained that the militants are likely to cross through Mendhar, Balnoi, Bhimber Gali, Balakote and Krishna Ghati in Poonch and Keeri and some border areas in Sunderbani and Laam Ladoka in Rajouri as these routes were not usually used by them. The shift in their strategy can also be gauged from the fact that the militants mainly used Kupwara, Uri and Gurez for infiltration in April-May, while the routes of Poonch and Rajouri were being used in the winter months. According to reports after the killing of many commanders and militants in the encounters by security forces, the militants are badly in need of money, weapons and manpower for running their operation in the state. Sources said till the militant camps in PoK are intact; these types of infiltration attempts would continue. Any misadventure on the part of security forces would be suicidal and the need is to further strengthen the vigil on the borders, the sources maintained.
