| Cong, PDP burn hearts over contentious bone | | | Jammu, Aug 19: The rift between coalition partners in Jammu and Kashmir over reduction of troops refuses to die down with People's Democratic Party (PDP) today renewing its demand and Congress saying the issue could be decided by the Centre provided it was satisfied with the law and order situation in the state.
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said those opposing this proposal have always worked on the dictates of security experts and these elements have never addressed the genuine aspirations of masses in spite of being in majority.
Army's role has to be replaced by restoration of civil authority and police happens to be a part of it, Mehbooba told a party workers convention at Awantipora in Pulwama district, 30 km from here.
She said people opposing the troops reduction proposal are only trying to gain some political mileage.
However, Congress said the issue can be decided only by the union defence and home ministries.
"The matter can only be decided by the defence and home ministries provided they are satisfied that peace and normalcy have been restored fully in the state and that people feel secure," state Congress vice president Abdul Gani Vakil told party workers at Kralkhud-Habbakadal.
Without naming PDP, Vakil said Congress was not averse to troops reduction but at the same time those who are demanding it are ignoring the ground situation in the state.
