| CM pays tributes to Jan, Mir | | | Srinagar, August 20- Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has paid rich tributes to G. M. Jan and Ali Muhammad Mir, sitting and former members of the Legislative Assembly, respectively who passed away during the intervening period of the first day of the current session and today when the House met here after a month long recess. Speaking on obituary references moved by the Speaker, the Chief Minister described Jan as a nice human being and an excellent politician who rose above party considerations in establishing personal relations. He said Jan did not allow politics to come in the way of his relations with people belonging to other political parties or groups. He said this is a unique quality which the late legislator possessed in great measure. Azad recalled his acquaintance with Jan and said that way back in 1970s when he was pursuing studies in Kashmir University and would go on trekking expeditions along with friends during annual summer breaks, he met Jan in the latter’s native village Gagrian in Poonch where the university students had gone trekking. He said since then they knew each other. The Chief Minister also recalled his meetings with Jan after the devastating earthquake hit parts of Jammu & Kashmir including Poonch about two years ago. He said he paid several visits to the affected area where Jan was with him. He said his concern for the people of the state as a whole and his constituency in particular was praise worthy. He regretted that he could not visit Jan’s native village which he had wished to do and the two had at least six times made programme to go there together. However, his ailment, he said, did not allow him to visit the Gagrian. The Chief Minister said in the death of G. M. Jan, the State had lost an able politician and a good human being. Azad also paid tributes to the memory of Ali Muhammad Mir and said although he had not worked with him but the late MLA was a well groomed politician who belonged to a prominent political family. He said when he was President Youth Congress, Mir was MLA in the State and worked for the welfare of the people of the state. The Chief Minister also paid tributes to the former Secretary, J&K Legislative Assembly, Wasim Shah and said by the sheer dint of hard work and dedication he had risen to the highest administrative position of the Assembly Secretariat. Azad prayed for the departed souls and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Members of the House cutting across party lines highlighted the qualities and efficiency with which the three departed persons had performed in their respective capacities during their tenure in the Assembly. Later, the House observed two minutes’ silence in their memory.
