| Akshey Urja Divas celebrated with enthusiasm | | | UDHAMPUR, AUGUST 20 Birthday of late Prime Minister, Rajeev Gandhi was celebrated as Renewable Energy Day (Akshay Urja Divas) at Udhampur, today. To mark the celebrations of the day, over 2000 students drawn from different educational institutions of the town took out a rally from Mini Stadium, Udhampur carrying banners and placards on the slogans “ Energy Saved is Energy Generated”, “Save Energy, Save Life” and “Energy Conservation, Life Preservation”. The Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur, Mr. O.P. Kalandria was the chief guest on the occasion. The Deputy Commissioner while addressing the huge rally of students said that conventional sources of energy are limited and need to be conserved and utilized effectively. He said the renewable sources of energy like wind, solar and water have to be harnessed and utilized for various end uses. He also suggested students to use CFL tubes in their houses to save electrical energy for future generations. Mr. Kalandria apprised that the Department of Science and Technology in coordination with Education department has chalked out a month long programme of celebrations on Energy Generation and Conservation by holding awareness programmes in different parts of the district with a stress on educating students. The department would hold Painting competitions, Debates, Symposia and Essay Writings contests in educational institutions. Others who spoke on energy conservation and renewable energy included Chief Education Officer, Udhampur, District Education Planning Officer, Mr. Dina Nath and Principal Boys Hr. Secondary School, Udhampur, S.K. Gandotra. Earlier, the rally was flagged off by the Chief Education Officer, Udhampur, Mr. Vinay Mohan Raina. The rally after marching through main bazaars of the town including Gole market, main bazaar, Salian Talab, Ramnagar Chowk, Mukerjee Bazar finally concluded at the main venue of function viz. Mini Stadium. District Coordinator, Science and Technology, Udhampur, Smt. Sunita Razdan extended vote of thanks. Other present on the occasion included Social worker and political activist, Mr. Shakeel Shah, District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Udhampur and Heads of various schools.
