| MILITANT GROUPS LOCK HORNS OVER CEASEFIRE | | | Srinagar, August 21 : Large number of militant groups, operating in Jammu and Kashmir, have locked horns over ceasefire, which was declared by Hizbul Mujahideen Chief Commander,Abdul Majid Dar,in 2000. Despite the fact that the unilateral ceasefire was withdrawn after a brief period the controversy over the declaration was kicked up by the Chief of Hizbul Mujahideen,Jamaitul Islam. The Hizb Chief had,in a statement, accused Abdul Majid Dar,who was later killed by rival group six years ago,for having weakened the freedom struggle by declaring unilateral ceasefire. Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement, headed by Zaffar Akbar Bhat, and Kashmir Liberation Movement, led by Assad Yezdani, have criticized the Hizb Chief for casting aspersions on those Hizb commanders and for accusing them as traitors who were no longer alive. Both the Salvation Movement and Liberation Movement activists support late Abdul Majid Dar. It may be mentioned that on account of differences the Kashmir Liberation Movement has not become a constituent of Hizb dominated Muzaffarabad based United Jehad Council which is headed by Syed Salahuddin. Both the Salvation Movement and Liberation Movement have asked the Hizb leadership to explain as to why it had appointed Abdul Majid Dar as Chief commander operations of Hizbul Mujahideen when his credentials were in doubt. The leaders of the two organizations have also criticized the Hizb leadership for having started dubbing Dar as an “Indian agent” on the plea that he and his close associates had been given separate identity cards by the Indian intelligence agency which enabled them to walk free during any cordon or search operations by the security forces. The differences have become so sharp that Hizbul Mujahideen leadership has questioned Salvation Movement on observing death anniversary of one Hizb commander, Masood. However, the salvation Movement and Liberation Movement leaders have suggested to Hizb leadership to desist from character assassination of those field commanders who had sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom struggle and said “any further criticism of these commanders will be very unfortunate. |
